The Best Way To Improve Your Work-Life Balance

You can have your cake and eat it too

In the first few years of launching a business, the boundary between work and life gets very blurred, and that often-discussed balance can very quickly fall by the wayside.

When I launched The Women’s Accountant, there were nights I’d be planning workflows in between prepping dinner, or I’d wake close to midnight remembering an email I needed to send to a client.

I don’t regret any of this. And I’m going to let you in on the secret why; it’s because I designed my business to reflect my values.

Starting a small business can be tiring; I’m not going to lead you up the creek and convince you it’s not. But there is a way you can have your cake and eat it too. You need to build your operation to reflect YOU – especially in the early days.

How to improve your work-life balance?

The easiest way to improve your work-life balance is to set non-negotiable core business values.

Business Queensland defines values as the things your business stands for, your philosophy, your reason for being, while non-negotiables are the things you are not willing to budge on for clients, suppliers and stakeholders.

When it comes down it, your work, your business, should reflect YOUR drivers.

For me, when I’d wake bolt upright with the thought of, “shite did I sent that?” I wasn’t approaching my work like it was work, I genuinely wanted to help my clients – in fact I thrived off it.

What are your Non-Negotiables?

Everyone is different, so values won’t and shouldn’t look the same across businesses.

One of my client’s non-negotiables, for instance, is to pick the kids up from school at 3pm, while another strives to have full transparency with clients.

One of my favourite core business values comes from search engine Google. They’ve set the company precedent that “you can make money without doing evil.” While another of their fun values states, “You don’t need to be at your desk to need an answer.”

Please, don’t be afraid to get unique when setting yours. Once you start growing, these values will filter through the company and form part of the wider culture; I say the more creative the better!

The right values bring work-life balance

Now to leave you with a fun, and somewhat tantalising, fact; if you build your values right, your work-life balance will come in time.

That sounds pretty good from where I’m sitting.
